Subject: How
soon until the Democrat's start using "STARRTHYISM" ???
I Dare Call it
Treason
By Ann Coulter
June 26, 2003
The myth of
"McCarthyism" is the greatest Orwellian fraud of our times.
Liberals are
fanatical liars, then as now. The portrayal of Sen. Joe McCarthy as a wild-eyed
demagogue destroying innocent lives is sheer liberal hobgoblinism. Liberals
weren't hiding under the bed during the McCarthy era.
They were
systematically undermining the nation's ability to defend itself, while waging
a bellicose campaign of lies to blacken McCarthy's name.
Liberals
denounced McCarthy because they were afraid of getting caught, so they fought
back like animals to hide their own collaboration with a regime as evil as the
Nazis. As Whittaker Chambers said: "Innocence seldom utters outraged
shrieks. Guilt does."
At the time,
half the country realized liberals were lying. But after a half century of
liberal myth-making, even the disgorging of Soviet and American archives half a
century later could not overcome their lies. In 1995, the U.S. government
released its cache of Soviet cables that had been decoded during the Cold War
in a top-secret undertaking known as the Venona Project.
The cables
proved the overwhelming truth of McCarthy's charges.
Naturally,
therefore, the release of decrypted Soviet cables was barely mentioned by the
New York Times. It might have detracted from stories of proud and unbowed
victims of "McCarthyism." They were not so innocent after all, it
turns out.
Soviet spies in
the government were not a figment of right-wing imaginations. McCarthy was not
tilting at windmills. He was tilting at an authentic communist conspiracy that
had been laughed off by the Democratic Party. The Democrats had unpardonably
connived with the greatest evil of the 20th century. This could not be
nullified. But liberals could at least hope to redeem the Democratic Party by
dedicating themselves to rewriting history and blackening reputations. This is
what liberals had done repeatedly throughout the Cold War. At every strategic
moment this century, liberals would wage a campaign of horrendous lies and
disinformation simply to dull the discovery the American people had made. They
had gotten good at it.
There were,
admittedly, a few rare and striking exceptions to the left's overall obtuseness
to communist totalitarianism. John F. Kennedy's pronouncements on communism
could have been spoken by Joe McCarthy.
For all his
flaws, Truman unquestionably loved his country. He was a completely different
breed from today's Democrats. Through the years, there were various epiphanic
moments creating yet more anti-communist Democrats.
The
Stalin-Hitler pact, Alger Hiss' prothonotary warbler, information about the
purges and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" - all
these had their effect.
But after World
War II, the Democratic Party suffered a form of what France had succumbed to
after World War I. The entire party had lost its nerve for sacrifice, heroism
and bravery. Beginning in the '50s, there was a real battle for the soul of the
Democratic Party. By the late '60s, the battle was over. The anti-communist
Democrats had lost.
In 1972, George
McGovern, darling of left-wing radicals, was the Democratic presidential
candidate. Tom Hayden, leader of Students for a Democratic Society and an
instigator of the Chicago riots, became a Democratic state senator in
California. (In 1968, Staughton Lynd wrote of Tom Hayden: "On Monday,
Wednesday and Friday he was a National Liberation Front guerilla, and on
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, he ... was on the left wing of the Democratic
Party.") Black Panther Bobby Rush would go on to become a Democratic
congressman. Todd Gitlin, a former president of SDS, would soon be a frequent
op-ed columnist for the New York Times. By the time of the 1991 Gulf War, only
10 Senate Democrats voted with President Bush to use troops against Saddam
Hussein. If the old Democratic Party was merely obtuse, the new Democratic
Party was a beachhead of domestic anti-Americanism. This was the new Democratic
Party.
Clinton was the
left's last best hope for proving they could too handle the presidency. Having
tricked the American people into entrusting a Democrat with the White House (on
a plurality vote), they had to defend him from any lie, any felony, any
reprehensible, contemptible conduct he threw their way.
When Clinton
first showed his fat oleaginous mug to the nation, the Republicans screamed he
was a draft-dodging, pot-smoking flim-flam artist.
Had the
Republicans turned out to be right again, it would have sounded the death knell
for the Democratic Party.
So the Democrats
lied. Through their infernal politics of personal destruction, liberals stayed
in the game for a few more years.
Unless we fight
for proper treatment of history and counter the nonsense images of McCarthy, no
history can be safe from the liberal noise machine.
Someday, school
children will be taught that all of America cringed with terror at Ken Starr,
whose evil designs on the nation were frustrated only through the sacrifice of
brave liberals. People will have vivid images of the pounding boots of Starr's
subpoena-servers and the Gestapo-like wails of alarms as Ken Starr arrived to
kick in the doors of innocent Americans and storm through their bedrooms. It
will be the Reign of Terror under Ken Starr.
Bill Clinton
will be revered in high school history books as the George Washington of his
day who, along with patriots Larry Flynt and James Carville, "saved the
Constitution." He will be honored with a memorial larger than the
Washington Monument (though probably with the same general design).
People will
believe that. And liberals will continue unabashedly invoking a lie in order to
shield their ongoing traitorous behavior

OK Dick I hear
ya, but why is she Stupid? And what did McCarthy actually cause? Exposing those
who were trying to undermine our country by spying for Russia and giving them
sensitive classified information that caused irreparable damage to our country
(e.g. Rosenberg's) and getting caught?
It's kind of
ironic that you mention those who deny the Holocaust ever happened, being that once
we found all of those mass graves in Iraq, most of you argued that it still
wasn't a good idea to liberate Iraq even though we found those Holocaust type
graves after the fact.
Your blanket
statement that she is stupid is your opinion, but I hardly think she is. Maybe
you were thinking of "Maureen Dowd" or "Robert Scheer?"
I know Liberals
across the nation still curse the corpse of Nixon for exposing "St. Alger
Hiss" but what will be interesting to see is how the Liberal media outlets
(ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, NPR, NY Times, LA Times, SF Chronicle, I guess
that just leaves Fox? I still can't understand why Liberals are complaining
that they want their "ALTV" and that there is no media outlets for
Liberals when you already have all of these Liberal media outlets? But I
digress...) will either examine her claims or maybe they'll just ignore them
altogether (e.g. Dan Rather - Chandra Levey, Gary Condit) and hope they just go
away so that the public doesn't become aware of this and have the truth actually
come out.
My guess is,
they'll (See above) start with ad hominem attacks on her then just dismiss her
claims as quickly as you have. Classic "Hillary 101."
But I guess we
will see.
Jack
BTW, I will
respond shortly to our little side discussion (I've been a little busy),
because I have a few questions for you. And I found what you wrote very
interesting and informative.

McCarthy just lied.
He was about to be dumped by his own party. He used the Red Scare that followed
the explosion of the Russian A-Bomb. He claimed, in a speech in New Jersey, to
have a list of 85 members of the Communist Party who were working for the U,S,
State Department. The next time he referred to the list, it had a different
number. Sometimes it grew, sometimes it shrank. NO ONE ever saw the list.
McCarthy's own people admitted that he had told them there was no list.
He was an
alcoholic and a liar. He started a scare, however, which cost people their jobs
and careers simply because they were mentioned in investigations, even when
they were never charged with anything. He knew the damage he was doing and he
let it continue. Finally, it was the counsel for that well-known subversive
organization, the U.S. Army, who brought McCarthy's reckless career to an end.
Ann Coulter revises history for those who never read any of it. There was no
question that Joe Mac was wrong, and that he had lied. Ann Coulter is stupid enough
to believe that there is no one who has studied the McCarthy era. She is shrewd
enough to know that there are those who will believe anything sensational
enough and anti-government enough to cause personal hysteria. Actually, she is
worse than stupid, she is as much of a liar as Joe Mac ever was.

Just curious
about your take on these two items...
Your earlier
quote regarding this topic was "Ann Coulter revises history for those who
never read any of it. There was no question that Joe Mac was wrong, and that he
had lied. Ann Coulter is stupid enough to believe that there is no one who has
studied the McCarthy era. She is shrewd enough to know that there are those who

Ms. Coulter
aside, I think Mr. Brennan has studied this topic and his take on it seems to
be in direct conflict with what you and I know. I've alway's believed the same
thing that most of America has believed. But now I will have to research this
more and give this a second un-biased look.
1) Coulter
Explodes Hollywood's Blacklist Myth
It is one of the
most enduring lies created by leftists: that all Hollywood trembled in fear
over the persecution allegedly launched against Tinseltown by Sen. Joe McCarthy.
Along with the
infamous Hollywood 10, actors, actresses, directors, producers and even the
guys who swept the studio floors were allegedly writhing in agony, fearing
they'd become victims of McCarthyism, and driven into unemployment and poverty.
There are just a
few things wrong with this - to begin with it's not true, Ann Coulter writes in
her best-selling new book, "Treason: Liberal Treachery From the Cold War
to the War on Terrorism."
Nowadays, nobody
bothers to point out that the phrase "McCarthyism" first appeared in
the pages of the Communist Party's organ in the U.S., the Daily Worker, which
got it directly from the bowels of the NKVD's Moscow headquarters at 3
Dzerzinski Square, where it was coined by the Stalinist disinformation experts
in the belief that leftist useful idiots in the U.S.
would adopt it
as their own. Which of course they did, eagerly, and continue to do so even
today.
The hysterical
cry of the terrible consequences of blacklisting - of McCarthy depriving honest
hardworking Hollywood celebrities of an opportunity to ply their trade, was
based on a lie. But as Coulter observes, everything we know about Joe McCarthy
is a lie.
The fact is that
the so-called blacklisting began when the House Committee on Un-American
Activities held hearings to determine the extent of communist penetration of
the film industry, which was extensive.
Witnesses known
as the Hollywood 10, acting under orders from their communist bosses, refused
to admit under oath that they were members of the Communist Party. For this
contempt of Congress they went to jail for a brief of time.
The Supreme
Court refused to hear their appeals. And these so-called victims of the
McCarthyite reign of terror, instead of being deprived of their civil
liberties, "had the benefit of legal counsel, trial by jury, and proof
beyond a reasonable-doubt standard," Coulter writes. "Still the
cosseted, overpampered Hollywood elites were shocked to discover they could be
held responsible for anything they did, and vowed that the rest of the country
would never hear the end of it.
"At about
the same time - under the legal system Communists revered, Stalin executed,
starved, exiled or imprisoned more than ten million people."
Coulter writes:
"Ten Hollywood scribblers who subscribed to an ideology responsible for
the murder by the million refused to admit their membership in the Communist
party to a House Committee," which McCarthy had absolutely nothing to do
with.
As Coulter
repeatedly points out, McCarthy was a senator, not a member of the House of
Representatives, where the committee did its work. He concentrated on communist
infiltration into the U.S. government, which the evidence from the Venona
intercepts now clearly shows to have been massive.
Recoiling in
fear of being labeled employers of traitors, courageous Hollywood film moguls
canned all 10 and refused to use them, at least not under their real names. As
a result some of them were simply allowed to work under false names and kept on
writing films and getting well paid.
Over and over we
are told that the so-called blacklist created a reign of terror in Tinseltown,
with everybody in filmdom cringing in fear.
Couler reveals
the terrible exile endured by one of the blacklistees: Norma Barzman, who was
forced to flee not to Devil's Island, but instead to gay Paree, where, in her
own words, she suffered such grievous punishment as having "dinner with
Picasso every Tuesday night when we were at our country house in Provence. Yves
Montand and Simone Signoret, Jacques Prevert were our friends. Plus we got to
work with all the amazing European directors including Vittorio De Sica and
Constantin Costa-Gavras. It was hard, but was also the time of my life."
Oh, the horrors
of it all!
"Meanwhile,"
Coulter notes, "back in the country they preferred [the U.S.S.R.], people
were being whisked off to Soviet gulags in the dead of night. They were being
sentenced to work in forced labor camps. They were sent to Siberia for five
years. They were being shot execution-style after being forced to confess to
absurd diabolical conspiracies."
But there was a
real Hollywood blacklist you never hear leftists talking about. As NewsMax.com
reported in The Left's Lies That Never Die, conservative anti-communists in
Hollywood were denied work because of their beliefs. Men such as Bruce Cabot,
Ward Bond, Adolph Menjou and many other members of John Wayne's anti-communist
Motion Picture Alliances were blacklisted and found work only in Wayne's
movies.
In
"Treason" Ann Coulter proves her point again and again: Everything
you think you know about Joe McCarthy is a lie.
2) The Left's
Lies That Never Die Phil Brennan Wednesday, April 23, 2003
The other day a
slobbering bunch of Hollywood crybabies were whining about the anger their
anti-American tirades have provoked among the American people, warning that
this reaction could result in a blacklist where they could find themselves cast
into the outer darkness, jobless and deprived of their right to express their
creativity as actors, actresses, producers, directors and writers.
This, they said,
could revive the terrible McCarthyite blacklist that left many of Hollywood's
celebrities unable to find work and subjected to scorn because of a blacklist
allegedly the work of evil old Joe McCarthy.
This is hogwash,
one of the myths spun endlessly by the left. And I'm sick to death of hearing
them repeated over and over again, often by people who ought to know better.
I've written about some of the more egregious myths, lies and distortions that
liberals keep dragging out of their arsenal of slime, but the lies just keep
coming. So here, once again, is another attempt to set the record straight.
The Hollywood
Blacklist Myth
Over and over
again we hear much about the plight of the so-called victims of McCarthyism -
an alleged army of people unfairly targeted by the Wisconsin senator. Gallons
of tears are shed over Hollywood actors, writers and others working in films.
The so-called
blacklist allegedly kept innocent people from working in Hollywood (despite the
fact that their left-wing friends continued to use many of these identified
members of the Soviet-led American Communist party - lately revealed as totally
an instrument of the Soviet Union - while concealing their assistance).
There are a
couple of things wrong with this blacklist myth. First, these people were not
what they are called today - victims of McCarthyism.
Joe had nothing
to do with the Hollywood hearings, which cited the communist membership of
those accused; they were solely the work of the House Un-American Activities
Committee and took place long before Joe took center stage.
And, by the way,
the so-called victims were members of the Soviet-dominated U.S. Communist party
and, as a result, under Soviet discipline - in other words, working for
America's sworn enemies. There's a word for that - it's called treason.
There was a real
blacklist, however, one that punished its victims as the mythical victims of
the hyped-up Hollywood blacklist claimed they were being punished. It was
composed of anti-Communists - famous and not-so-famous actors and directors who
could not find work because of their anti-Communist activities. People like
Adolph Menjou, Ward Bond, Bruce Cabot - all members of John Wayne's anti-Communist
Motion Picture Alliance.
Wayne
courageously stood up for these people - and you can see most of them in reruns
of countless Wayne films. He used them over and over, keeping them working when
nobody else would hire them. They were the real victims of the real blacklist,
spurned by the studios and treated as pariahs by the Hollywood elite.
The McCarthyism
Myth
Let's start with
the phrase McCarthyism - a slander the left simply loves to hang around the
necks of anybody who happens to disagree with them and tries to counter their
deadly influence over American life.
Do any of those
who throw the word around have the faintest idea of where that word was coined?
Are they aware that it was hatched in the bowels of No. 3 Dzherzinsky Square -
headquarters of the KGB in Moscow? Or that it was first used in the columns of
the communist newspaper the Daily Worker before the left-wing media and their
liberal allies eagerly picked it up for use against anti-communists, thereby
doing exactly what the Soviets expected these classic useful idiots and closet
Soviet sympathizers to do?
And it continues
to this day - the term is used to brand any cause or group the left considers
inimical to its paganistic socialist dogma as being something dark and sinister
and un-American.
The viciousness
directed at conservatives and anti-communists by the left during the '40s and
'50s is displayed today against pro-lifers, religious conservatives, Bush
supporters and all others opposed to the socialist agenda that liberals seek to
impose on America.
And the
socialism that they espouse is every bit as coercive as the Soviet communist
system with which they could find no wrong in the days of Joe McCarthy.
Communism, after all, was described simply as "socialism in a hurry."
In other words,
communists kill or cow all the supporters of liberty in a reign of terror
before socialists take over and herd the mindless, dumbed-down sheep left into
the Marxist pen.
The heirs of the
people who could tolerate Stalin's murderous regime, which slew people by the
tens of millions, are the people who find it easy to tolerate the horror of
partial-birth abortion - and the sale of the body parts of the tiny victims of
this holocaust. And they employ the same smear tactics and lies against
pro-lifers that their forerunners used against McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover and
their fellow anti-Communists.
The McCarthy Was
Wrong About Communist Subversion Myth
Joe McCarthy,
like all of us, was a flawed human being. On many occasions Joe's background as
a combative Irish ex-Marine rose up and led him to act more as a street fighter
than a cool and collected lawman dealing with a sinister conspiracy protected
by some of the nation's elite. But the thrust of his campaign against Soviet
stooges among us was right on target most of the time.
I refuse to
simply close the books on the so-called McCarthy era, because the excesses of
the far-left against anti-Communists were forerunners of the excesses of the
liberals of the present day. They smeared their foes, lied about them and
created a whole slew of myths that remain current to this day.
And they
continue to use the same tactic. Take for example the disgraceful behavior of
the liberal Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings or
Senate Democrats who stymied the Thompson Committee investigation into Chinese
espionage and their illegal campaign contributions to the Democrats and
Clinton-Gore.
Or their current
attempt to prevent Senate confirmation of Miguel Estrada by conducting a
filibuster, which is nothing less than an assault on the Constitution of the
United States.
Then there's the
matter of the source of many of Joe's accusations - accusations being proved by
release of the so-called Venona intercepts of Soviet cable traffic whose code
was broken back in the mid-forties and remained top secret until recently.
These
intercepted cables proved that there were over 350 Americans spying for the
Soviets, and enabled investigators to identify about half of them.
Joe McCarthy had
access to the information contained in the top secret Venona intercepts -
access given him by J. Edgar Hoover and others concerned with the extent of
Soviet espionage and penetration. B
But he could not
defend himself against charges of recklessly accusing people of being Soviet
agents by revealing the source of his information without alerting the Soviets
that some of their most important secrets were known to U.S. intelligence.
One of the more
revealing admissions recently made by the left was Carl Bernstein's quote from
his father, who, with Carl's mother, was a top Communist Party member. Here's
what Bernstein recalls his father warning him when his 1989 book,
"Loyalties: A Son's Memoir," was published:
"You're
going to prove [Sen. Joseph] McCarthy was right, because all he was saying is
that the system was loaded with Communists. And he was right.
...
I'm worried
about the kind of book you're going to write and about cleaning up McCarthy.
The problem is that everybody said he was a liar; you're saying he was right.
... I agree that the Party was a force in the country."
The
Hoover-Was-a-Sexual-Deviant Myth
The smear
tactics used by the Soviets to discredit J. Edgar Hoover by falsely charging
that he was a cross-dressing sexual deviant are taken as fact by the media and
many Americans despite the fact that it has been revealed that the charges -
utterly unproven and absurd - were widely disseminated by, among others, the
KGB's disinformation shop.
Does anybody
really believe that the most famous cop in America - a man almost paranoid
about maintaining his privacy, as well as being a target for every Red and
crook and KGB plant in the nation, could show up at parties dressed as a woman
and not have the fact explode in headlines within hours?
Give me a break!
The facts in
this case are well known, but ignored by those who never forgave Hoover for his
effective war against communist subversion in the U.S. In his book "The
Bureau: The Secret History of the FBI" Ronald Kessler effectively
demolishes this filthy slander in which liberals love to wallow.
Here are the
facts, as Kessler recounts them:
The myth has its
roots in British author Anthony Summers' 1993 book, "Official and
Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover." Summers' source for the
story was one Susan L. Rosenstiel, a former wife of Lewis S.
Rosenstiel,
chairman of Schenley Industries Inc.
Summers claimed
that Hoover did not pursue organized crime because the Mafia had blackmail
material on him. In support of that, Summers quoted Mrs.
Rosenstiel as
saying that in 1958, she was at a party at the Plaza Hotel where Hoover engaged
in cross-dressing in front of her then-husband and Roy Cohn, former counsel to
Sen. Joe McCarthy.
"He
[Hoover] was wearing a fluffy black dress, very fluffy, with flounces and lace
stockings and high heels, and a black curly wig," Summers quoted Susan as
saying. "He had makeup on and false eyelashes."
She went on to
assert that Hoover later engaged in sex with young boys, adding that her former
husband followed suit.
A year later,
she said she saw Hoover at New York's Plaza Hotel, this time wearing a red
dress. Around his neck was a black feather boa. He was holding a Bible, and he
asked one of the blond boys to read a passage as another boy played with him.
The jacket of
the book says: "Mafia bosses obtained information about Hoover's sex life
and used it for decades to keep the FBI at bay.
Without this,
the Mafia as we know it might never have gained its hold on America."
To begin with,
Susan Rosenstiel, the primary source for the cross-dressing story, was not
exactly a credible witness. In fact, she served time at Riker's Island for
perjuring herself in a 1971 case.
And she had it
in for Hoover, who she believed had somehow worked against her during her
divorce proceedings, and had long tried to interest anyone who would listen
that Hoover was a cross-dresser. She had even taken her allegations to Robert
M. Morgenthau, the U.S. attorney in New York, who himself had no use for Hoover.
"She used
to call me after 5:30 p.m. when my secretary had left, so I wound up having to
listen to her," Morgenthau told Kessler, adding that he found her claims
baseless. But he did share her allegations with William Hundley, who had a
Justice Department attorney look into them.
"Susie
Rosenstiel had a total ax to grind," Hundley told Kessler.
"Somebody
who worked for me talked to her. It was made up out of whole cloth. She hated
Hoover for some alleged wrong he had done. Plus the story was beyond belief. I
told Summers this. Then he goes ahead and uses it."
As others have
written, Hoover, allegedly silenced by the Mafia because they had the goods on
him, went ahead and relentlessly pursued the mob, starting with top mobster
Meyer Lansky.
Writes Kessler:
"In an Esquire piece, Peter Maas, a world class journalist who died in
2001, pointed out that Summers's rendition of events has a fatal flaw: After
the alleged incident at the Plaza, Hoover assigned agents to investigate
Lansky, who supposedly had the goods on him. When the Miami Field Office
complained that the investigation of Lansky was not producing enough
information to justify the manpower, Hoover wrote back, 'Lansky has been
designated for "crash" investigation. The importance of this case
cannot be overemphasized. ... The bureau expects this investigation to be
vigorous and detailed."
"Still
presumably cowering because Lansky had incriminating photos of him, Hoover
followed up with an order to install bugs in Lansky's apartment.
Having been
ordered by Robert Kennedy to attack the Mafia as the FBI had attacked
Communism, Hoover wrote in the January 1962 FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, 'The
battle is joined. We have taken up the gauntlet flung down by organized crime.
Let us unite in a devastating assault to annihilate this mortal enemy.' Yet
even before Kennedy took over, Hoover, stung by the disclosure of the 1957
Apalachin meeting, had been pursuing the mob aggressively."
Hoover was more
familiar to Americans than most presidents. The director of the FBI simply
could not have engaged in such activity at the Plaza, with a number of
witnesses present, without having it leak out. To believe otherwise is the kind
of self-delusion to which liberals cling with the unshakable faith of blithering
idiots.
Tragically, the
utterly false Hoover cross-dressing myth is now widely believed, even to the
extent of providing grist for the late-night TV comedians' mill. A nation that
should be expressing its gratitude to Hoover's memory for his long and dedicated
service to his country instead treats him as an object of slander and derision.
These and the
other liberal lies sicken me, and they should sicken all decent Americans. But
that won't stop the left from spreading them far and wide. That's their sleazy
stock in trade.
