Two days later we are leaving North Bend for the real part of the journey. Thanks to Bob, my grandmother's always-generous husband, the bus has four brand-spankin'-new tires. I also took it to the local VW guy who tuned up the bad boy and, as a bonus, found me a vintage ignition and sweet VW keys for it. Translation: no more hotwiring and tape. The VW guy also fixed my door latch so it would actually close. This was great until I was showing Bob how great it was when the damn latch broke inside the door. Translation: Not only would the door stay closed, now it wouldn't even open. Fack! Solution: Use the passenger side to enter and exit. Side note: We prayed for no rain since, if you look closely, there was only one windshield wiper. (At least it was on the driver's side.)
